Important Note Regarding Performance Based Questions

The simulations used in both the CompTIA A+ and the CertBlaster are just that, simulations. Don’t think that you can simply click around and hope to get lucky. For example, in the CertBlaster each simulation consists of several steps but most other menu entries will not work in these simulators.
Interactive questions

The other interactive question types are exhibit-based questions, drag and drop questions, and fill in the blank.
Exhibit based

This question category will ask the question and then you display the exhibit. There are three exhibit-based types. Based on what you see you will respond by providing the correct answer or dragging a checkbox to a location onscreen.
Drag and Drop Questions

This question presents a list of labels that you will drag into the correct order or location specified. Take your time and place the labels in the appropriate location.
Fill-in-the-blank

Hopefully, you’ve seen this type in your studies to this point. It is a straightforward question that requires you to know the correct term or phrase and enter it in the answer field. Depending on the question your response should be complete and use the correct command syntax or utility. In the example here you are asked to use the Linux command to change the owner of a file. Since there is no other information in the question like “Change the Owner of a file to user 502 – or – Mikeb” The only feasible response is chown. The majority of responses will be no more than three words.

Well, there it is! Now you know a little more about your “enemy” and have a better chance for success!

Microsoft Certifications

The mass majority of computers used within organizations run Microsoft operating systems. With this in mind, knowledge of Microsoft technologies is vital. Earning the latest Microsoft certifications is the best way to prove this knowledge to employers.

As a general rule, plan to study about 60 days for any Microsoft certification exam. This assumes you have a solid IT knowledge base and meet the prerequisites for the exam.

People that self-study Microsoft certifications commonly use virtualization to create entire practice networks. If you have a powerful PC with plenty of RAM, you can easily set up a virtual environment with one or more virtual servers and one or more virtual desktop systems. For those who prefer to learn in a classroom (or virtual classroom) environment, there is a variety of instructor-led Microsoft training programs.
CCNP

The CCNP is an advanced Cisco certification and includes complex topics on security, voice, wireless, and video solutions within both local (LAN) and wide area networks (WAN). Once you’re CCNA certified, you must pass three additional exams to earn the CCNP:
642-902 ROUTE - Implementing Cisco IP Routing
642-813 SWITCH - Implementing Cisco IP Switched Networks
642-832 TSHOOT - Troubleshooting and Maintaining Cisco IP Networks

It’s common for people pursuing the CCNP through self-study to buy routers and switches to build their own lab.
CCNP study time: 6 months (about 2 months per exam), after passing CCNA

What CompTIA Security + Certification

With each passing day, cybersecurity is becoming more complex. In the era of digitalization where the cyber-crime rates are touching the sky, the traditional methods can no longer protect your valuable data from the unwanted snoopers. In order to implement the new technology, the organization required experienced professionals who have skills to bring the necessary changes. Cyber security skills are high in demand nowadays. This means possessing these skills with not only make you a capable individual but also opens new doors of opportunities for you.

Recently, in its ISACA disclosed that there are not enough cybersecurity experts to go around. Although it is a bit disappointing new for some but for many it sounds like a golden opportunity. Of course, the gap can be filled if interested people come forward to pursue the CompTIA Certification course but right before they do it, they really want to know what big change this security certification will bring in their lives. And through this blog, we are about to discover these things:

CompTIA Network+ is a vendor-neutral network certification for IT professionals. According to CompTIA, the exam “validates the essential knowledge and skills needed to confidently design, configure, manage and troubleshoot any wired and wireless networks.” So, what does vendor-neutral mean? It means that the certification is designed to represent networking technology in general and not just one specific manufacturer. This is different than say Cisco certification which is based on Cisco products, or a Microsoft certification that is based on Microsoft products.

The Network+, or Net+ as it is commonly known as, is an entry-level certification for IT professionals in the networking. It is designed to indicate approximately nine months of networking professional experience.

Information Security Analyst certification

While all network administrators have some elements of cybersecurity in their jobs, information security analysts need more specific skills. Start off by earning your CompTIA’s Security+ certification; as you move up, focus on CompTIA CySA+, Project+ and PenTest+, along with ISACA CISA, SANS/GIAC and Cisco’s CCNA. When you hit the advanced levels, you’ll need either CASP+ or ISC2 CISSP. The average salary for cybersecurity specialists is $98,350, according to the BLS.
Software Developer

Software developers need experience with programming languages, of course, but also look for certifications from AWS, Google, Microsoft, Oracle, Red Hat and VMWare that help you see how your applications fit into the larger system. This career path offers one of the highest IT salaries: $105,590, according to BLS.
Data Specialist

Data specialists who oversee a company’s database and turn raw data into usable information are looking at an average salary of $90,272, according to BLS. Look to beef up your skills through certifications from IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and SAS.

Whichever direction you go in IT, start with an attitude of continuous learning. Nothing in tech stands still, and neither should your knowledge. The more you learn, the more valuable you’ll be. Then add certifications to help prove that you know your stuff, to either your current employer or a future employer.

Cyber Threat Intelligence Can Be Useful

“Distributors have been making [cloud] investments for years now. They’re starting to get really well positioned. They’ve all launched cloud business units, they’re sharpening their tech skills,” he said. “It’s more than having a marketplace, you’ve got to have technical skills to articulate the value of various products, etc. They’re recruiting new partners, vendors, and generating billions of dollars of business from cloud and digital services.”

So, what does all this Astros stuff have to do with threat intelligence sharing and threat profiling? Quite a bit, actually: the Astros supposedly profiled pitchers by stealing signs and then sharing that information with its players about the next pitch – or, in a way, the next big hit. Even if they broke the rules, they had the right idea: wouldn’t it be nice to see how your opponent is going to attack you?

When it comes to combating hackers, it’s acceptable to profile the tactic, technique and procedure (TTP) that a hacker adopts. We’re seeing the growth of Information Sharing and Analysis Organization (ISAO) entities, including one at CompTIA. And organizations gather and analyze threat intelligence feeds to help them determine from where the next cybersecurity hit will come.
How to Use the MITRE ATT&CK Navigator for Threat Modeling

One way to figure out where the next hit is coming from is to use the MITRE ATT&CK Navigator, shown in Figure 1, below.

You see, it’s one thing to have a general ransomware plan in case of a cyberattack. That’s a good thing. That might actually put you further ahead than most companies, even today.

But, it’s quite another thing – a much better thing – to have a detailed, tactical, procedural understanding of how to respond to an attack. You see, the promise of cyber threat intelligence is that you can get the blueprint of a response.

Rediscovering His Tech Skills for a Career Change

When Deegan was a kid, his tech-savvy father was the type to pick up the latest tech gadget which, at that time, meant a PC with its cursor flashing at the DOS prompt. Then came Windows. Deegan got into that operating system’s first wave of popular games, all the while teaching himself the basics necessary to use and troubleshoot a machine of that era.

He found it fun to compute, but life took him in a different direction. In high school there weren’t any classes on IT or computing to guide him down the professional path. By graduation, he found himself employed in a non-technical field making good money, and it seemed like it was good enough.

Throughout his career in management, though, he continued to tinker with computers. Assembling a desktop here, fixing a laptop there; it was always in the periphery. As was his theoretical interest in the mechanics of white hat hacking.

Suddenly, these interests jumped to the forefront. Deegan took a programming class to start getting a feel for the contemporary standards of the tech world, while also looking for jobs. When an entry-level IT position availed itself, rather than just sending over his resume, he spoke with the hiring manager. He went in for an interview, and his combination of natural tech acumen, potential and recent study got him a job at the help desk.

CCNA Routing & Switching certification

You earn the CCNA R&S certification after passing the CCNA composite exam, or by passing the ICND1 (which you already passed if you earned CCENT) and ICND2 exams. The CCNA composite exam can be quite challenging and it’s very common for people to take it as two separate exams instead of just one.

CCNA certification builds upon the general skills you learned during Network+ exam prep with proprietary topics, such how to install, monitor and troubleshoot Cisco devices. Most candidates spend a lot of hands-on time with Cisco equipment, or with lab simulators. Through its training partners, Cisco offers a range of campus-based and online CCNA training programs where you can gain hands-on experience using the latest Cisco devices.

After completing the CCNA certification, there are many specialized Cisco certifications network administrators can pursue depending on their goals and interests. Specializations include network security, voice, and wireless topics.
CCNA study time: 3 months, after passing CCENT
CCNP

The CCNP is an advanced Cisco certification and includes complex topics on security, voice, wireless, and video solutions within both local (LAN) and wide area networks (WAN). Once you’re CCNA certified, you must pass three additional exams to earn the CCNP:

Prepare for the CompTIA A+ certification

If you want your organization’s IT professionals to acquire the latest IT proficiency in networking and hardware, then you can enroll them for this course - CompTIA A+ Certification Prep (Exam 220-1001 & 220-1002). If your teammates want to enhance their fundamental skills of IT, then you can enroll them in these CompTIA courses.

CompTIA presents you with a number of questions with accompanying graphics of questionable quality. Interpreting exactly what the image represents frustrates some test takers. CompTIA has come a long way in this department (there’s actually very few images that I find hard to interpret), but it only takes one to put the unprepared test taker into a bad mental place.

If you run into a graphic that confuses you, put yourself in the question maker’s place. Say to yourself “What are they trying to make me see here?” and you’ll find those confusing images much less of a problem.
Don’t Get Stuck on Performance Questions

Both of the CompTIA A+ exams start by presenting the test taker with one or more “performance” questions. These questions range from simple drag-and-drop to full-blown simulations. Personally, I like these questions (regular multiple-choice bores me), but you might find some that lack an intuitive interface – the classic “what are they trying to do here” type of question.

common issues faster with A+ certification

Many people say that it is not worth the time and expense of achieving certification status. Others seem to think that it is an absolute necessity for anyone getting into the IT industry. The truth, like so many things, is probably somewhere closer to the middle.

Let’s take a closer look at the arguments for and against this entry-level certification — and discuss six reasons (in no particular order) why you should earn the new CompTIA A+ certification.
In this day and age of service-level agreements, why get your hands dirty? You can simply call the vendor and have them resolve the issues. But wouldn’t it be quicker if you could just do it yourself?

Yes, it is true that most companies will send out their own service technicians to repair most hardware on site. But some manufacturers will ask you to perform the first line troubleshooting with them over the phone. They can help you point and click, but it’s easier if you can narrow it down in the correct terms. The A+ can help with that — the new exams cover a bevy of operating systems and demonstrate that you can be trusted with a screwdriver. After all, not everyone should be opening a computer, printer, or server.

An added bonus, when you save the day by resolving that printer issue, you’ll be the office hero. That doesn’t happen very often for IT pros.

It’s recommended to take practice tests. However, keep this in mind that practice tests don’t necessarily have the same questions as you will face the actual exam. But these questions are always important and prepare you for the exam. Taking these practice tests also help you learn stress management, time management, and how to answer all the questions within the given time efficiently.
How Do Practice Tests Help You Earn CompTIA A+ Certification?

CompTIA A+ practice tests are intended to help you pass your 220-1001 and 220-1002 exams. Obtaining them now becomes easier than ever.

Practice tests will help you in outlining all the test pitfalls they’ve gone through. This will guarantee you great results in your CompTIA exams.

Practice tests will make you familiar with the exam questions and answers by scoring your results to prepare for the test comprehensively!

Conclusion

Confirming your skills through the CompTIA A+ certification and relevant exams is the only way you can prove your commitment to succeed in the ever-expanding IT world. Acquiring tech skills isn’t something to be overlooked or neglected.

Steps to be the Best Technology

It’s that time of year where we all reflect and think about goals for the year ahead. 2018 has certainly seen many changes for the industry, and we can safely say 2019 will bring many more. The annual State of the Channel study gave us food for thought on the focus needed for the next year, with optimism all round but a clear need for vendors to evolve. So, to kick off the year in the best way possible, we’ve pulled together a must-do list to ensure vendor success and growth for 2019.
Basics 101

With so much innovation, change and disruption all around, it can be easy to lose track of foundational elements that are essential to your business. Before thinking about new and exciting avenues, check that you’ve covered these fundamental points:
Clearly documented processes and procedures.
Strong technical support with problem-solving capacity.
Strong brand message and position.
Clear and consistent pricing model with margin for the MSP.
Ability to move with the trends and markets.
Good product and/or solution training support.
Understanding of the needs and challenges of end-users.
All of these efforts are extremely important to our members and to the entire country. Exports of products and services by the U.S. tech industry totaled an estimated $322 billion in 2017, according to CompTIA’s 2018 Tech Trade Snapshot. Further, exports account for approximately $1 out of every $4 generated in the nation’s tech industry; and directly support 40 percent of tech manufacturing jobs. The rules of trade – market access, fair and reciprocal treatment and transparency – impact the flow of technology goods and services that meet the needs of businesses and consumers.

Making Blockchain More Secure

After working closely with CompTIA’s Blockchain Advisory Council and other committees, I’ve concluded that the organizations that do well will follow the principles and procedures outlined in the following documents:
Harnessing the Blockchain Revolution
Building a Culture of Cybersecurity: A Guide for Corporate Executives and Board Members

In addition to the above white papers, we’ve been having deep conversations with blockchain implementation specialists. At RSA 2018, I discussed blockchain with more than 100 cybersecurity experts, and we outlined several concerns, many of which have been borne out by the Ethereum Classic attack.
A Blockchain Manifesto? A Report from the RSA 2018 Blockchain Focus Group

Finally, I spoke with two blockchain implementation experts from Dell and Microsoft during one of our IT Pro Webinars in 2018.
Blockchain: Separating the Hype from the Reality

I’m certain that we’ll see quite a few more setbacks, stutter-steps and missteps as companies continue to implement public and blockchain solutions. We’ll also see more brilliant uses of it as things move forward.

One thing is for sure: The folks who get blockchain going properly will do so using properly trained technologists, and properly informed management. They’ll follow time-honored security procedures and many of the same solid IT management principles that allow companies to compete, as well as compute, securely. As long as they pay attention to the details and avoid hype-based thinking, they’ll be able to transform their companies as securely as possible.

If you’re interested in learning more, CCN.com offers a nice summary of its findings. Once you’ve read it, ask yourself a question: Does this really mean the end of blockchain, or is this just a problem with its implementation? And, also ask yourself, what can I do to learn more about properly implementing blockchain in the future?

The State of the SOC

Global security operations center (SOC) professionals, chief information security officers (CISOs), chief information officers (CIOs), cybersecurity analysts and other IT management roles are constantly battling the growing cyberthreat landscape. At the top of the security chain of command are the CISOs, who are consistently keeping data safe, secure and accessible at all times.

Despite this high-pressure responsibility, they also have to deal with business challenges, governance, risk and compliance. Together, they are the critical frontline outpost of cyber-defense.

SOCs become critical to helping a CISO ensure all potential security incidents and risks are identified, examined, defended against and reported. With thousands of new adversaries and security vulnerabilities appearing each day, being a security professional can be extremely challenging. As a result, security professionals can face extreme stress and fatigue. Organizations also struggle to update technology, retain employees and hire new talent.

In addition, CISOs and other members of the C-suite may be out of touch with the everyday challenges their SOC teams are facing. Oftentimes, this causes a false sense of confidence when it comes to how well a SOC can respond in the face of a cybersecurity crisis.

Expanded Online Resources

In the coming months, CompTIA will be adding more resources to the website to help you do your job better and become familiar with emerging tech topics. Get answers to questions on everything from cybersecurity to cloud computing to drones to artificial intelligence (AI).

Pretending to Be a Robot on a Routine Security Contract

Martha Wells is a prolific author from Texas who started winning major writing awards in the 1990s. Her 2017 novella, All Systems Red, is the first in The Murderbot Diairies, and she’s won both Hugo and Nebula awards for it.

All Systems Red hinges on what’s hidden and what’s been compromised, much like CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst (CySA+) and CompTIA PenTest+. There’s danger and a question of data integrity, and a character even asks a question like, “Is it possible for someone to hack [fill in the blank]?” As cybersecurity pros may know best, the default answer is “Yes.”

The book is written as the diary of a self-named Murderbot, who is a cyborg-like security unit under contract to protect a group of scientists, but it would rather be watching serial dramas. The current planetary expedition seems pleasantly routine, until it’s not. Look for social engineering skills from a Murderbot (and some high-level hacking references). Sometimes being known isn’t the biggest risk.

When you see a commercial for SAP HANA, they’re not talking about the speeds, they’re talking about what the technology is doing to make the world a better place,” she said. “In our industry, we talk our own lingo and nobody cares.”

Give them one takeaway, rather than throwing out every single benefit you can think of.

“Develop your one key message and then layer,” she said. “Add relevant content based on who you’re talking to and what their communication style is.”

Tailor your message in an inverted pyramid approach, she said, meaning you start with one key takeaway, add important details only and supplement with on-demand content.
